Dr Erwin Sick, the founder of SICK, was an avid inventor who was driven to enhance the power of human vision by combining electronics with optical technology to monitor machinery.

The origins of SICK hark back to Steinheil, which was an optics company in Munich where Erwin worked in the development department. Erwin was tasked with finding a better way of protecting employees from the perils of dangerous machinery which could easily remove a limb.

Seeing a light beacon at the former Munich Riem Airport and watching the beam rotate gave him the idea to develop the autocollimation principle which revolutionized machine safety technology.

Developing the Light Curtain

This led to the development of the light curtain which would shut down a machine should an object or person break its beam. In 1951 Dr Erwin also invented a device that could detect print marks on packaging materials making it possible to easily automate food, manufacturing, and packaging processes. He also went on to develop numerous other technologies including a device which could measure the emissions produced by smokestacks

These product breakthroughs ensured the continued success of SICK in the years that followed, allowing them to develop even more innovative protective devices which are used in industries all over the world. Today SICK has one of the largest product offers in the industry.
